Political leaders have called for stronger democratic participation, unity and adherence to electoral processes as Nigeria prepares for future elections.
The call was made during an Iftar (breaking of fast) gathering organised by Lilian Adebayo, wife of the former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, which brought together politicians, civil society representatives and members of the media.
Speaking at the event, the National Chairman of the SDP, Sadiq Umar Gombe, stressed the importance of unity, religious tolerance and constructive political engagement in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
He noted that gatherings such as the Ramadan Iftar provide an opportunity for political stakeholders to reflect on shared national values and promote dialogue across party lines.
Professor Gombe added that although political actors were present at the event, the gathering was primarily a social and religious engagement aimed at encouraging mutual understanding and cooperation.
Also speaking, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Adewole Adebayo, emphasised the need for policies that encourage greater citizen participation in governance and elections.
Adebayo said the spiritual lessons of Ramadan, particularly humility and accountability, should guide the conduct of political leaders and public officials.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, called for policy adjustments within Nigeria’s electoral framework to enhance democratic participation.
He expressed concern over provisions such as indirect party primaries and the mandatory use of the National Identification Number in political processes, noting that such measures could limit broader participation in politics.
Dantalle also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to strictly adhere to electoral rules to sustain public confidence in the electoral process.
Meanwhile, the Forum of State Chairmen of the Social Democratic Party has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening internal party structures and promoting a policy-driven political platform aimed at national development.
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Idris Adamu, the forum congratulated Gombe on his confirmation as national chairman and urged party leaders at all levels to deepen internal democracy, strengthen grassroots mobilisation and promote policy-based engagement with citizens.
