With the 2027 general elections approaching, the Federal Government has cautioned civil servants to steer clear of partisan political activities while in service.
Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, issued the warning on Friday in Abuja during the Quarterly Stakeholders and Citizens Engagement interactive session.
Reacting to concerns over a trending Supreme Court judgement, Walson-Jack explained that while the ruling permits civil servants to hold membership cards of political parties to safeguard their constitutional right of association, it does not authorise them to engage in political campaigns or partisan conduct.
“It’s an old judgement, and it is still in force,” she said. “Civil servants can be card-carrying members of a political party, but they must abide by the terms and conditions of service. Your first responsibility is to remain neutral and non-political.”

She stressed that public servants are expected to serve the government of the day without bias. “You cannot go and be partisan. Anything contrary will be dealt with in accordance with the rules and regulations of the public service,” she warned.
