The Delta State College of Nursing Sciences has issued a disciplinary query to a student nurse, Osato Edobor, for allegedly recording and sharing an unauthorized video on social media during the visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Delta State.
A letter addressed to Edobor, signed by the institution’s provost, Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, and dated March 27, 2025, accused her of engaging in a “malicious act” by filming herself singing and posting an “unofficial response” to a song during the First Lady’s arrival at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba.
The event was part of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, which saw the distribution of 10,000 professional kits to midwives in the South-South region.
The college cited a violation of its student handbook, referencing a disciplinary provision under “Standardised Disciplinary Action for Some Punishable Offences No. 8, Page 21.”
Edobor has been given 24 hours to provide a written explanation in triplicate, justifying why disciplinary measures should not be taken against her.
The controversy stems from a viral video in which nursing students at the event seemingly rejected the First Lady as their “mother.
” When the event’s Master of Ceremony introduced Tinubu with the customary title, “everyone’s mother,” the students responded in unison, “Na your mama be this,” meaning “This is your mother,” indicating their refusal to accept the designation.
The video has sparked widespread reactions, with many interpreting the students’ response as a reflection of public discontent over economic hardship, inflation, and insecurity under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Despite the controversy, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori commended the First Lady’s efforts, noting improvements in the health sector through the RHI programme.
Oluremi Tinubu also met with traditional rulers at the Traditional Rulers’ Council Chambers, including the Orodje of Okpe, retired Major General Felix Mujak Peruo.
