Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of one of his predecessors, General Jeremiah Timbut Useni (retd). Wike described his passing as the “fall of one of the biggest trees in the forest of Nigeria.”
In a statement released on Friday morning in Abuja by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Wike noted that Useni’s loss would be deeply felt by all.
He praised Useni as a significant figure in Nigeria’s history, highlighting his contributions to the development of the FCT during his tenure as Minister from 1993 to 1998 under the late General Sani Abacha’s regime.
Wike further acknowledged Useni’s extensive service to the nation, which began at the age of 14 when he joined the Army.
He went on to serve as the Military Governor of the defunct Bendel State, Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, FCT Minister, and Senator for Plateau South.
“He was a true leader, fondly known as ‘Jerry Boy,’ who dedicated his life to serving the people,” Wike remarked. “His unwavering commitment to his country and his people will never be forgotten.”
He added that Useni’s legacy would live on in the hearts of the Tarok people of Plateau State and all Nigerians.
Wike extended condolences on behalf of himself and the people of the FCT, describing Useni as a great man, patriot, fine military officer, politician, peacemaker, and man of deep faith in God.
The late General’s impact, Wike concluded, would be deeply missed by the people of Plateau State, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the entire nation.
