A tragic road accident in Ebonyi State on Wednesday, January 22, 2024, claimed the life of a female prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member and left several others injured.
The incident occurred when a 14-seater bus, carrying 13 prospective corps members heading to the NYSC orientation camp in Afikpo, crashed into a parked truck along the road.
The victims, believed to be part of the 2024 Batch C Stream II, were en route to the camp for their three-week orientation.
According to sources, the bus was traveling in the Amenu community within the Okposi area of the state when it collided with the stationary truck.
The deceased, whose identity remains unknown, succumbed to her injuries, while the other passengers sustained varying degrees of injury.
Residents and security personnel quickly responded, rescuing the victims and transporting them to the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences in Uburu, where they are currently receiving medical care.
A hospital source confirmed the arrival of the injured corps members, stating, “They were brought to the hospital in the evening. They are stable and responding to treatment.”
The Ebonyi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Igwe Henry, confirmed the crash but clarified that his officers were not involved in the initial rescue efforts. He noted that preliminary findings indicated excessive speed as a potential cause of the accident.
The FRSC officer further added that the accident took place at approximately 2:00 PM on the Amasiri-Okiigwe road, near Amenu village in Okposi.
The two vehicles involved included a commercial Toyota bus and a Mercedes-Benz tipper truck.
“Preliminary reports suggest that excessive speed may have contributed to the crash. However, we are still awaiting further details on the extent of injuries,” Henry said.
The State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Foluke Oladeinde, also confirmed the incident but was too distressed to comment further, as she was at the hospital at the time of the inquiry.
