Donald Trump touched down in Washington on Saturday as he prepares for his inauguration, marking his return to the presidency.
Accompanied by his wife, Melania, and other family members, Trump arrived at Dulles International Airport and headed to a private event at his Virginia golf club, which featured a fireworks display.
In an interview with NBC News earlier in the day, Trump revealed plans to sign a significant number of executive orders immediately after delivering his inaugural address on Monday.
While the exact number remains undecided, he described the figure as “record-setting.” When asked if the orders could surpass 100, Trump replied, “at least in that category.”
Trump indicated that his executive orders would aim to reverse many policies implemented during President Joe Biden’s administration.
Among his promises for Day One is the initiation of a mass deportation program targeting undocumented immigrants.
“The expulsion will begin very, very quickly,” Trump said, though he refrained from specifying the cities involved, citing ongoing developments. “You’ll see it firsthand,” he added.
Tom Homan, Trump’s newly appointed “border czar,” acknowledged in an interview with The Washington Post that the administration is re-evaluating its initial actions after media leaks. Reports had suggested a large-scale immigration raid was planned for Chicago on Tuesday.
“We haven’t made a decision yet,” Homan said, emphasizing that any operations would target individuals deemed “public safety threats” from the outset.
“We’ll be arresting people across the country, uninhibited by any prior administration guidelines,” he added.
The inauguration ceremony, traditionally held on the steps of the U.S. Capitol overlooking the National Mall, has been moved indoors due to an unusually cold weather forecast.
“I think we made the right decision,” Trump told NBC, citing safety concerns for attendees.
On Sunday, Trump is expected to lay a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery before addressing supporters at a Washington rally. He is also slated to speak at a dinner event later in the evening.
Meanwhile, protests against Trump’s policies erupted in Washington on Saturday, with thousands of demonstrators marching through the city streets.
