A violent confrontation erupted on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti between members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders, following the alleged death of a ticketing officer.
The clash, which lasted for nearly two hours, involved the use of dangerous weapons such as knives and cutlasses, leaving several individuals injured.
According to an eyewitness who requested anonymity, the altercation began when the Okada riders accused OPC members of being responsible for the death of their ticketing officer.
The incident reportedly took place near the OPC office in the Atikankan area of Ado-Ekiti, a location known for frequent unrest.
In response, the Police Rapid Response Squad (RRS) intervened, arresting six individuals at the scene, while others reportedly fled.
Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, confirmed the incident, stating:
“At about 11:20 a.m. on Thursday, we received a distress call that some individuals were attacking and robbing residents in the Atikankan area of Ado-Ekiti.
“Our operatives were dispatched to the location and successfully apprehended six suspects. Investigations are currently underway, and efforts are ongoing to locate other suspects who escaped.”
The police assured the public that measures are being taken to ensure peace is restored in the area.
