The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Jibia Border Command, has handed four intercepted suspected victims of human trafficking to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for rehabilitation.
The Command’s Comptroller, Mr Haruna Zakirai, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Daura, Katsina State.
He said that the four suspects, all females, claimed to be from Osun.
The comptroller further said that the command equally intercepted three persons who claimed to be Ghanaian nationals.
Zakirai said that they would be forwarded to the NIS headquarters Abuja, for handing over to the Ghanaian High Commission in Nigeria.
He said, “The victims of human trafficking were en route Daura from Osun on their way to Libya without any valid travel documents.
“The investigation conducted revealed that their intention was to go to Libya to get jobs when they were intercepted by the immigration officers.
“They have been handed over to NAPTIP in the ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling.”
Zakirai said that NIS was committed to combating migrant smuggling through a comprehensive approach involving prevention, enforcement and international cooperation.
He appreciated the NIS Comptroller-General, Kemi Nandap, for donating a Hilux vehicle and other operational facilities that would aid in tackling crimes within the country borders.
Receiving the victims, the NAPTIP’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Isa Abdulmalik, said the agency would carry out diligent investigation on the suspects for the next line of action. (NAN).
