The Federal Government has earmarked the sum of N1 billion for execution of key projects in Universities across the six geo-political zones of the country.
The fund according to Benue state Governor Gabriel Suswam, who heads the Needs Committee in the ongoing negotiation with the striking Academic Staff Union of Nigerian universities (ASUU), is an intervention fund.
Speaking with State House correspondents on Friday, he said specific funds will be made available annually for key projects in the Universities across the country.
One of the key demands of ASUU is that government should make intervention funds available as it was done for the banking sector so that necessary facilities and equipments needed for research and learning could be provided.
Suswam also said President Jonathan will soon embark on a tour of the Universities that will be selected on Tuesday to flag-off the projects.
“It will start with the sum of N1 billion and we set up a wall committee which will report back to the bigger committee on Tuesday for us to be able to select universities across the six geopolitical zones where the President will decide to go and flag off projects worth about N 1 billion,” he said.
