Gov. Bassey Otu of Cross River has promised to exploit all available resources in the blue economy to the benefit of the state and the people.
The governor made the pledge during an inauguration of a ferry service between Calabar and Limbe in Republic of Cameroon on Tuesday.
Represented by his Deputy, Mr Peter Odey, the governor described opportunities in the maritime sector as the gateway to economic freedom.
“The blue economy is an area we won’t take for granted. It’s not only a gateway to the Gulf of Guinea but it will improve the economy of the state,” he said.
While inaugurating the ferry service, the governor promised to provide a conducive environment for businesses to thrive.
He invited potential investors to take inherent advantage in the state to establish their businesses.
“We will do everything within our power to ensure that your businesses will thrive.
“We have investors looking at Tinapa Business Resort and Obudu Cattle Ranch. Businesses have started growing in Cross River again and we are leaving no stone unturned to support these businesses.
“I commend you for choosing to do this as well as bringing this high investment to our dear state.
“We will partner with you through the ministry of transport to ensure a safe and smooth take off. You won’t regret bringing this to the state,’’ the governor said.
On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of Sea Express Transit Ltd., Mr Thompson Eja, commended Cross River Government for supporting private businesses through provision of a conducive and enabling environment.
“Seeing the governor coming to grace the launch of a private-owned business simply means that Cross River state is back.
“The waterways can change the economy of Cross River. As we speak, we have three ferries at the moment; two for Oron and today, we have one for Republic of Cameroon.
“I and my partners are fully committed. We are working very hard to contribute to the vision of his Excellency, Sen. Bassey Otu to develop the blue economy of Cross River State.
“I attended an export event, all I heard was it’s difficult to freight agricultural produce especially cocoa, amongst others from Cross River. We will like to be part of the solution that will change that narrative.
