Barely one month after she attended the Elite Women Instructors Course organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Morocco, the assistant coach of Nigeria’s senior women’s football team, Super Falcons, Ann Agumanu-Chiejine, has today in South Africa bagged another international coaching certificate after completing a week-long first-ever CAF Goalkeeping Elite Instructors Course in Johannesburg.
Prompt News reports that of the 20 participants invited by CAF for the course, 18 are men while Chiejine and one other attendee are women. The
coach who also holds CAF Grade A and B Licenses, UEFA and USSF Coaching Certificates as well as Nigeria Institute of Sports (NIS) Diploma in football coaching received her new badge earlier today in South Africa
The CAF Goalkeeping Elite Instructors Course in Johannesburg which ran from Saturday, December 2 to Saturday, December 9, 2023, is a new programme introduced by the continental football governing body as part of its deliberate efforts to develop women’s football in particular and football in general.
According to CAF Development Director, Raul Chipenda, “CAF’s objective with this course, is to create a panel of experts specialized in Goalkeeping, who can train and develop new Goalkeeping Instructors in the different Member Associations”.
For this reason CAF Coaching Department in Cairo, Egypt in its wisdom picked Nigeria’s Chiejine, an African legendary goalkeeper who was in goal for the West African nation in three FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in 1991 in China, 1995 in Sweden and 1999 in the United States of America (USA) where Nigeria reached the quarter final stage, thanks to Chiejine’s extraordinary goalkeeping prowess.
She also kept for Nigeria in Sydney 2000 Olympic Games in Australia as well as two Africa Women Championship (AWC) now WAFCON in 1998, 2000 and 2002 in Nigeria and South Africa before retiring from active football to via into coaching.
Recall that Chiejine also obtained her badge as a CAF Elite Women Instructor a month ago in far away Rabat, Morocco after attending a one-week CAF Elite Women Instructors Course organised by the continental football ruling body in the North African country.
She is the current assistant coach of Super Falcons just as she has also served as both goalkeeper trainer and assistant coach to junior and senior women’s football teams since she was first appointed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as assistant to the Olympic team for the 2007 African qualifiers ahead of 2008 Beijin Olympic Games. Chiejine was in 2013 appointed assistant coach of the Falconets U20 Falconets in Costa Rica and the U17 Flamingos in 2016 but was later moved to Super Falcons to assist Head Coach Florence Omagbemi to win the 2016 WAFCON in Cameroon.
She was reappointed as assistant coach of Super Falcons three years ago to assist Randy Waldrum, making her the longest serving assistant coach of the senior women’s football team.
