No fewer than six secondary schools have participated in the eighth edition of the National Assembly quiz competition in Bauchi State.
The schools are: Government Day Secondary School Matsango, Azare; Government Day Secondary School, Toro, and Model School, Misau.
Others are Sa’adu Zungur Secondary School, Bauchi; Sunshine International School, and Immaculate Conception School, Bauchi.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition is being organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).
The quiz competition is an educational programme aimed at increasing awareness about the role of the legislature in the nation’s democracy.
It also aim to promote and reward pursuit of excellence in legislative endeavour; challenge and stimulate secondary school students on national matters, and encourage continued participation in the study of legislative matters in schools at sub-national and national levels.
The Director-General, NILDS, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, who spoke during the exercise on Thursday in Bauchi, said the competition was organised for students across the 30 participating states.
Represented by Simon Wakawa, Bauchi State Coordinator, NILDS, Suleiman said the purpose of the competition was to provide continued education in the legislature and broaden the knowledge of students.
According to him, it is also designed to widen the knowledge of the youth on the history, practice and procedure of the legislature as well as encourage deeper understanding of civic and democratic governance.
“The competition will also stimulate the interest of students in politics and make them more proactive in matters relating to the legislature and democracy.
“The first edition of the competition was held in 2016 with participating schools drawn strictly within the Federal Capital Territory.
“It continued to be an annual event in that format until the Institute’s Governing Council headed by the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives directed it to be expanded across the country.
“This was successfully done in the year 2022 in collaboration with all the states of the federation but with only 30 states participating, and this is the 8th edition of the competition which is the second time it’s being held at the national level,” he said.
Also speaking, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Dr Jamila Mohammed-Dahiru, said that, “education is not only acquire in the classroom but through other curricular activities such as debates, quiz competition, sports, among others”.
Represented by Mr Shehu Abdulsalam, Director of School Services in the ministry, Mohammed-Dahiru urged the participants to observe rules and regulations of the competition.
Meanwhile, Sa’adu Zungur Secondary School, Bauchi clinched the first position at the end of the competition while Government Day Secondary School Matsango, Azare, and Government Secondary School, Toro occupied second and third positions, respectively. (NAN). READ ALSO:
