Two warring communities in Ebonyi and Benue states are to exchange visit on Oct. 14 to demonstrate implementation of the peace accord reached on their protracted boundary dispute.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Mgbo community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area (LGA) of Ebonyi, and Agila community in Ado LGA of Benue had been feuding over land.
The boundary dispute had claimed several lives with properties worth millions of naira destroyed despite peace efforts to curb the crisis.
Chief Ikechukwu Odono, Chairman of Ohaukwu LGA, said on Tuesday while addressing the people, that his administration had brokered lasting peace between both communities.
Odono said that he, alongside stakeholders such as the Deputy Speaker of Ebonyi House of Assembly, Chief Chinedu Onah ensured that security was restored at the disputed area.
“Our engagements with our Ado neighbours have yielded fruits and they will pay us a friendly visit on Oct. 14.
“We will also reciprocate such visit and efforts would be intensified to sustain the peace accord,” he said.
He noted that security has improved generally in the area since he assumed office on Sept.1, 2023, and sought the people’s collaboration to secure lives and properties.
“It was gratifying to celebrate the nation’s 63rd independence anniversary and 27 years of Ebonyi creation at the council headquarters which had not occured before now.
“The stakeholders gathered to celebrate with school pupils and students re-enacting the traditional march past among other activities.
“The development brought nostalgic feelings in me because such used to happen when I was in primary and secondary schools,” he said.
He noted that the council leadership will enhance the people’s wellbeing through massive investment in education, health, agriculture, and infrastructural development among others.
“We have placed the council on God’s path and the people should expect the return to glorious days.
“I also thank Gov. Francis Nwifuru for his efforts in developing Ebonyi state within a short period in office and my people have benefited greatly,” he said. (NAN). READ ALSO:
