A 30-year-old farmer, Emmanuel Yusuf, on Tuesday, appeared before a Grade I Area Court in Karu, Abuja, for allegedly cheating a client of N280, 000.

The police charged the defendant, who resides behind Kurudu police station with criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal misappropriation.

The Prosecution Counsel, Olanrewaju Osho, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in 2020.

Osho said the complainant entrusted furniture materials valued at N250,000 and additional N30,000 as workmanship totalling N280, 000 to the defendant to help him produce a set of furniture to be delivered within three weeks.

The Prosecutor said, with the intent to cheat the defendant converted the money to his use and failed to deliver the job.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 312, 322 and 309 of the Penal Code.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Judge, Malam Umar Mayana, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two reasonable sureties in like sum.

Mayana ordered that the sureties must provide a valid identification card, a certified statement of account and address verified by court staff.

He also ordered that one third of the money involved be deposited as security of bail.

The judge adjourned the case until June 7 for hearing. (NAN)
