By Gracious Akujobi The Federal Capital Territory Secondary Education Board is to partner with the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) to develop taekwondo in the nation’s capital, Abuja.
The initiative which is facilitated by the Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation (CCSF) will see taekwondo as part of the secondary school curriculum in the FCT.
Founder of CCSF Chika Chukwumerije said the idea would see the NTF and the CCSF train about 400 students from four Government Secondary Schools (GSS) in the FCT, in taekwondo.
“When we did our research, we found out that almost every private school had taekwondo but the public schools did not.
“This made us to write an elaborate plan to the secondary education board who agreed to give it a trial and approved it to be part of the school curriculum.”
He said the programme which would be launched in March in conjunction with the Secondary Education Board was aimed to inspire the kids to interact with some international taekwondo athletes.
Chukwumerije also said that the target was to build a team CCSF and athletes that would represent the country at various international competitions.
The Olympic bronze medallist added that the initiative was part of the CCSF effort to develop the sport in the country following a successful takeoff of its zonal taekwondo programme tagged “Inspire The Zones.”
