By Gracious Akujobi Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Gbenga Elegbeleye has joined hands with the Federal Ministry of Health to kick out cancer in football.
The DG who made special appearance at the old parade ground where the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, (SWAN) FCT chapter played a novelty match against the Federal Ministry of Health football team said it’s high time sports men and women faced the fight against cancer head on.
He said it is unfortunate sports men and women battle and loose the fight against the dreaded disease.
“I like this initiative from the Ministry of Health because it is helping to create more awareness on cancer treatment.
“If everyone is aware of dangers cancer can cause in the society at large, we all will be proactive and check ourselves.
“Many people are dying of cancer but with regular test cancer deaths can be reduced to the barest minimum.
“This disease recently took the life of one of our sportsmen, a goalkeeper who served this nation. This should not be. They say it’s a terminal disease but I believe early detection will prevent such occurrence,” he opined.
Elegbeleye however called on every one including sportsmen and women to make themselves available for tests as most people have the chance of survival if it is detected early enough.
