Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, are to be awarded Honorary Doctorate Degrees at the 14th Convocation Ceremony of Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo.
Prof. Timothy Adebayo, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, made this known on Monday in Oyo, at a news conference to herald the 14th Convocation ceremony of the university.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ACU, established in 2005, is a faith-based institution of higher learning established to raise godly intellectuals.
NAN reports that the conference was attended by Prof. Muyiwa Popoola, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor; Dr Jadesola Babatola, the Registrar; Dr Beatrice Fabunmi, the Librarian and Mr John Olusanwo, the Bursar.
Adebayo said that Wike, Sanwo-Olu and Makinde, as members of the Anglican Family, would be honoured for their contributions to the church as well as the country.
He said that 41 of the 1,547 graduating students made First Class, while 583 bagged Post-graduate Degrees and 34 bagged Doctorate Degrees.
“In this convocation, various Degrees will be awarded to 1,547 undergraduate students, 583 postgraduates and 34 Doctorate Degrees.
“I am proud to let you know that Mr Victor Adetunji from our Law Faculty bagged First Class in the final Law School examination and seven others made Second Class Upper Grade.
“It gives me great joy that this feat evidently attests to the productive intellectual climate and research aptitude of the university,” he said.
The VC said that they do not undermine quality and ethical standards in research, adding ACU had successfully produced PhD holders that could conveniently compete with contemporaries across the globe.
Adebayo said that they have been able to put the university in the journey to greatness, adding they would always improve by sustaining excellence and ethical traditions.
He said that the university had continued to enjoy stability and advancement in its academic activities.
Adebayo said that the institution offered 43 courses fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The VC said that the most recently accredited course was the Bachelor of Nursing Science programme, describing the accreditation as a great accomplishment.
Adebayo said that the university had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on academic linkage for research, training and development with the University of Georgia, U.S.
He said that the Convocation Lecture would be delivered by an erudite scholar of international distinction, Prof. Akinloye Ojo of the African Studies Institute, University of Georgia.
“Our mutually-beneficial academic relationship with Bowie State University, U.S; University of the Fraser Valley, Canada, among others, have been helping our faculty staff.
“It’s been helping them in international lectures, conferences and workshops, and in deserving cases, through subsidised travel expenses.
“The agreements with the universities will definitely lead to an evolution of successful strategies to deal with issues concerning academic and educational excellence,” he said.
