The Federal Capital Territory Ministerial Taskforce on City Sanitation has closed Jikwoyi Phase II junction that constitutes a major gridlock on the busy road.
Mr Ikharo Attah, the Head of the Taskforce and Senior Special Assistant on Monitoring, Inspection and Enforcement to the FCT Minister, Malam Mohammed Bello, made this known on Tuesday, while addressing newsmen after closing the junction, Attah said that the measure was meant to ease the flow of traffic on the axis.
He said that the taskforce had two weeks ago inspected the Karu-Jikwoyi road with some stakeholders in line with the minister’s directives to decongest the gridlock that usually starts from Nyanya, Karu, Jikwoyi – Kpegyi linking Karsh town due to some unconventional activities.
He explained that FCT Administration was keen on ending the chaotic situation on the road by removing all the illegal structures built on the road shoulders on Karu-Jikwoyi road.
“Especially the JikwoyI Phase II junction that motorists have converted to a bus stop that builds up traffic.
“Sealing of the junction and planned pulling down of the illegal structures was meant to ease movement of vehicles and the residents that ply the route.
“Sealing of the Jikwoyi Phase II today, is one of the measures that we have taken to ease free flow of traffic on the axis.
“We have identified the causes of the traffic gridlock on Karu-Jikwoyi road, we will ensure that all the illegal structures built on the road shoulders are pulled down,’’ he assured.
Attah assured that the exercise was not meant to infringe pain on the people rather “it is meant to address the logjam that people have been experiencing and complaining about.’’
He said that strategic stakeholders were fully in support of the FCT administration’s stance on the measure.
He said that all the vehicles that plied the road or would be plying the road should go to the Celestial Church junction to make a U-turn, saying “that the area is better for the U-turn’’. (NAN)
