By Gracious Akujobi Defending Federation Cup champions, Rivers Angels Sunday afternoon defeated Sunshine Queens 2-0 to lift the cup for the fourth straight time at the Teslim Balogun stadium, Lagos.
The Port Harcourt girls who paraded players of the Super Falcons started on a bright note from the blast of the whistle but could not convert any of the chances as the Sunshine Queen goalkeeper Funke Okewole stood between them.
Asisat Oshoala, Aminat Yakubu, Mercy Amanze and Stella Mbachu all lost scoring chances in the first half.
Second half resumed with same pressure from a Rivers Angels who were rewarded in the 66′ when a right wing cross was met by Mercy Amanze and Funke Okewole makes a save but Asisat Oshoala reacted too fast for the rebound.
The second goal came in the 86′ when Stella Mbachu pounced on a goal mouth scramble to hand the defending champions an insurance goal.
Coach of Rivers Angels Edwin Okon,who also doubles as coach of Super Falcons expressed happiness in the resilience of his girls and their ability to retain the cup for the fourth consecutive time.
“Our aim for this Federation cup is to win it and I am happy we have achieved that today. The goal line does not matter what matters is that we have won it again. As defending champions I am happy we have won it again and will be taking it back to the good people of our state”
The loosing coach Kayode Olujoungbe said he does not want to make excuses because his team were beaten by Rivers Angels
“For this game, Rivers Angels were the better side especially after so many errors we made at the defense. But no problem because we will come up stronger next season”
Rivers Angels as the defending champions have won the Federation cup for the fourth consecutive time having won it in 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014.
