A bomb blast rocked Government Science Secondary School in Potiskum, Yobe State in the north eastern part of Nigeria, killing no fewer than 47 persons.
Prompt News gathered that a suicide bomber detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) as students gathered for the Monday assembly.
Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, said 47 have been confirmed dead while no fewer than 79 others are injured.
“There was an explosion detonated by a suicide bomber. We have 47 dead and 79 injured,” Ojukwu, an Acting Commissioner of Police said.
No group has claimed responsibility for the explosion as at the time of filling this report.
However, the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents have intensified attacks in the north east of late.
Despite the recent ceasefire agreement claimed by the federal government to have been reached with the sect, attacks have not abated.
Borno State government Kashim Shettima, last week confirmed that the insurgents are now controlling 16 Local Government Areas in the north east.
A couple of weeks ago, the sect attacked and conquered Mubi, the second largest town in Adamawa State, leaving thousands displaced.
Earlier, the insurgents had conquered three Local Government Areas, including Madagali, Gulak and the village where the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh hails from.
Sequel to escalation of attacks by the Boko Haram sect, President Goodluck Jonathan in May 2013 declared emergency rule in the frontline States of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.
But, it appears the enforcement of emergency rule is not effective as the insurgents seem to be having upper hand while the military appears incapacitated.
