The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Oyo State on Thursday began awareness campaign of the electorate on the newly created 1, 607 polling units (PUs) in the state.
Dr Mutiu Agboke, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), led other management staff of INEC to paste the PUs identification stickers at some of the newly created polling units in 10 local government areas.
Speaking with newsmen during the exercise, Agboke said it was in the public domain that the INEC had upgraded some polling points to polling units.
“This was the major exercise the commission carried out sometimes in 2021; the conversion is to make voting exercise easier during elections.
“Thus, voters will not need to go far distance from their places of abode to vote during elections.
“So, one of the things we felt we should do is to step up our campaign, bring the awareness to the door steps of our people in the additional 1,607 polling units created in Oyo State.
“The commission produced the stickers, placed them on cardboards and attach it to these centres, so that anybody passing by will see it and know what INEC is talking about.
“INEC has now gone practical; we have given electorate the indication to various posts to be able to see where these PUs were allocated.
“So, people in the newly created polling units should be guided by these notices so that they can come to the new PUs to vote on election day,” Oyo REC said.
He added that the conversion of polling points affected 32 out of 33 local government areas of the state
Agboke urged eligible voters residing within the vicinity of the newly created polling units to visit INEC office in their respective local government areas to do transfer of names to the respective new polling units.(NAN)
