The Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Government, John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated the need for all parties in Burkina Faso to respect the principle of democracy and constitutional governance as stipulated in the Constitution of the country, as well as the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
In a statement released at the weekend, the Chairman said ECOWAS has noted the resignation of the President of Burkina Faso, Blaise Compaoré on 31 October 2014, and acknowledges that this has opened a way for dialogue and peace.
He therefore, again called on all the parties to resort to dialogue which is the only way of arriving at political consensus that will lead to free, fair and credible elections in accordance with the constitutional provisions.
The Chairman further calls on all the parties to work in the overall interest of the people of Burkina Faso in order to guarantee peace and stability in the region.
In this respect, the ECOWAS Chairman enjoins the parties to show the necessary restraints and to refrain from taking actions which will exacerbate an already fragile situation.
ECOWAS will continue to work closely with the people of Burkina Faso and the international community to ensure sustainable peace and stability in Burkina Faso.
ECOWAS remain seized of the situation in Burkina Faso and will take further action in accordance with its Normative Frameworks, if and when deemed necessary.
