The Plateau Government says it has commenced the process of constructing 10 automated vehicle inspection centres across the state to ensure efficient transport sector.
Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, Commissioner for Transportation disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Jos.
Abubakar said that the initiative being done in collaboration with some information technology firms, was aimed at promoting efficiency in service delivery within the sector.
“We are trying to bring about technology in the transport sector of the state, we are now constructing a computerised vehicle inspection centre,” he said.
He said that an agreement was signed with SYC Temple Computerised Vehicle Inspection for the construction of the centres in the state.
“As we speak the first centre is about 85 per cent completed after that we will go to the second which will be in the central area part of the state,” he said.
The commissioner said that the southern and northern area centres would follow.
He said that construction of the centres would solve the problems associated with manual processes in the transport sector.
Abubakar said that the technology would help ascertaining the road worthiness of vehicles as against the manual process used by Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO).
He said that some vehicles were issued road worthiness certificate without going through the process.
“So with these, the road worthiness certificate will be automated through the computerised vehicle inspection centre,” he said.
He said that the IT company would work with the VIOs before handing the centres over to them.
The commissioner added that the entire ministry’s operations would also be computerised to ease operation.
“We will also be monitoring the activities of motor parks from the headquarters through this system,” he said. (NAN)
