The Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning & Urban Development (MPPUD) with the financial support of the European Union (EU) and the German Government within the framework of the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP) carried out Building Energy Efficiency Code (BEEC) awareness creation workshops for Building Professionals’ Bodies and Academia, and Private Developers and Insurance Companies in Lagos State.
The BEEC, which specifies the minimum requirements to achieve energy efficiency in building design and construction, was developed and launched at the Federal level in 2017. To further promote the nationwide use of energy efficiency measures in the building sector, NESP is supporting the state-level adoption of the Code.
Consequently, Lagos State is currently piloting the adoption and implementation of the BEEC to showcase the benefits of designing and constructing energy efficient buildings in Nigeria.
In his keynote address, Dr. Idris Salako, the Commissioner, Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning & Urban Development, said, “Energy Efficiency presents an ideal opportunity for professionals in the built environment to develop their own technical expertise, not only because of its global trend, but in terms of Lagos State’s socio-economic vision and contributions towards a cleaner, healthier built environment for all”.
In her capacity as a building professional, Engr. (Mrs.) Abiola Kosegbe, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos
State Ministry of Physical Planning & Urban Development, has called upon fellow professionals to leverage the knowledge gained on the BEEC to redefine the building industry’s commitment towards supporting policies that deliver improved building and environmental performance in Lagos State.
In a statement the the events, she said, “The workshops aim to sensitise building professionals and private
developers on the benefits of the BEEC and enhance their understanding of energy efficiency measures to encourage the application of the BEEC requirements in their practices”.
Following the keen interest of Lagos to become a sustainable, smart city, Duke Benjamin, the Head of Programme, NESP, emphasised NESP’s willingness to support Lagos towards its adoption of the BEEC.
He also added that, “the BEEC, when adopted, has the potential to achieve at least 40% energy savings for both
commercial and residential buildings in Lagos State. NESP is also willing to support other states interested
in adopting the BEEC to their existing building regulations.”
NESG is a technical assistance programme co-funded by the EU and the German Government, and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Power (FMP).
It aims to foster investments in the Nigerian renewable energy and energy efficiency sector.
