Kwara Government has set up a 10-member committee to investigate the corporal punishment meted out to some students of an Arabic school in Ganmo area of the state.
This is contained in a statement issued by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye on Tuesday in Ilorin.
According to Ajakaye, the committee which comprises Muslim scholars, community leaders and government officials is to be chaired by retired Justice Idris Haroon.
He listed other members of the committee to include the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Religion (Islam), Alhaji Ibrahim Maigoro, Prof. Hamzat Abdulraheem, and Prof Badmus Yusuf.
The rest are: Prof. Abubakar Imam-Aliagan, Dr Mohammed Alaya, Dr Saudat AbdulBaqi, Hajia Balikis Oladimeji of the Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria (FOMWAN), Malam Lawal Olohungbebe, and Dr AbdulHameed Sanni (Secretary).
According to Ajakaye, the terms of reference of the committee include meeting with the affected students, their parents, and the school authorities on the circumstances around the corporal punishment meted on the students.
“They will also review the reward and disciplinary methods in such schools and make recommendations to the government on how to prevent a recurrence of such in the state.
“The committee has one week to submit its report, beginning from their first sitting,’’ Ajakaye said.
The students were seen in a video that went viral on social media being flogged by their instructors.
The students, three boys and a girl were said to have attended a birthday party, where they allegedly drank liquor, a conduct which is against the rules of the school. (NAN)
