Nigeria has won a seat to serve for a second tenure in the Open Government Partnership (OGP) global steering committee scheduled to commence on Friday, October 1, 2021 for a 3-year period.
National Coordinator of OGP in Nigeria, Dr Anne Nzegwu disclosed this at the OGP 3rd quarter 2021 Technical Working Group meeting in Abuja on Monday, said it was heartwarming that the country has made great strides in the global community.
She also disclosed that as the global Steering committee plans to organise its 10th year anniversary, Nigeria, along side other OGP implementing countries has been requested to identify it’s most impactful commitment under NAP 1 for award consideration.
According to her, the Governance and Leadership Committee has set up “a 12 man committee which worked on Nigeria’s entry for the award adding that the result will be announced at the 2021 virtual global summit scheduled to hold in South Korea in December this year.
Dr Nzegwu said, “Despite these modest achievements, there is still much to be done to ensure the delivery of NAP 11 before the September 2022 deadline.
” Our commitment to the civil society remains sacrosanct as we have demonstrated this in our recent efforts to ensure that the civil society is aware of the internal mechanisms and objectives of the States Fiscal Transparency Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAS) Program for results (PforR)”, she added.
The OGP is a global partnership that brings together government reformers and civil society leaders to create action plans that makes government more inclusive, responsive, and accountable.
Nigeria which signed up to this global initiative since 2016, is currently implementing the second successive National Action Plan.
The first NAP was implemented between 2017 – 2019, while the second is being implemented between 2019-2022.
The International OGP body has an Independent Reporting Mechanism (IRM that monitors all action plans of countries to ensure governments follow through on commitments.
