The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has urged the Federal Government and Nasarawa State Government to provide relief materials to victims of flood disaster in the state.
This, the assembly said, would cushion their hardships, improve their standard of living, and for the overall development of the state.
The Speaker of the assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, made the call while reading the House resolution after Mr John Osewu ( APC) , member representing Doma South constituency, brought the issue under matters of public importance during proceedings on Monday in Lafia.
Balarabe -Abdullahi also urged the people of riverine communities across the state to adhere strictly to the advice given by experts and governments at all levels on the need for them to relocate to safe areas.
” Let me appreciate Hon. John Osewu for coming up with this matter of importance at this time and for drawing the attention of the government on what is happening in his constituency.
” I also appreciate Hon. Mohammed Okpoku and Hon. David Maiyaki for their contributions. I appreciate you all.
” Our resolution is of effect that this House calls on the relevant government agencies to assist the victims of flood disaster that is ravaging communities across the state.
” We call on the National Orientation Agency ( NOA) and the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency ( NASEMA) to be up and doing by sensitising our people to adhere strictly to the advice given by government to relocate from danger zones to safe places to avoid further loss of lives and property,” he said.
Earlier, Osewu while bringing the matter, appealed to his colleagues to support him to enable the government to come to the aid of flood victims in his constituency.
He said that the flood had washed away farm produce and other items worth millions of Naira in many riverine communities of his constituency.
He appealed to the government to assist the victims in order to improve their standard of living.
On his part, Alhaji Mohammed Okpoku ( APC/ Udege-/ Loko), while contributing, also appealed to government to assist flood victims across the state.
Okpoku said that flood had also affected communities in his constituency.
Also contributing, Mr David Maiyaki ( APC- Karu/ Gitata), who lamented the effects of flooding across the state, however, commended the support recently provided by the Federal Government to victims of the disaster in Keffi and called for extension of such gesture to other communities with similar cases.
In another development, the assembly deliberated on a report of the Joint Committee on Finance and Appropriation / Public Account on a Bill for a Law to Provide for Management of Funds Accruing to the Nasarawa State Judiciary from the Consolidated Revenue Funds of Nasarawa State and all other Services to Ensure Accountability, Transparency , Effective and Efficient Utilization of Funds and for Other Matters Connected Therewith.
The speaker slated Sept. 27 for the third reading of the report after the House adopted the report.
Mr Tanko Tunga, the Majority Leader of the House, while giving the substance of the report, said that it was all about the financial autonomy of the Judiciary.
Tunga, then, moved a motion for the adoption of the report which was seconded by Mr Abel Bala, the Minority Leader of the House. ( NAN)
