The global union of football players, FIFPRO, has called for reforms to the international game’s calendar to address the need for a reduced workload for players.
The call has come in the wake of FIFA’s announcement of a feasibility study into making the World Cup a biennial event.
FIFPRO said any expansion of the calendar must include proper safeguards for players’ health and that the reforms should facilitate the development of both men’s and women’s football.
“Proposals isolating further expansions such as a biennial World Cup — as well as other competition reforms under discussion — are inadequate in the absence of solutions for existing problems,” FIFPRO said in a statement on Tuesday.
FIFPRO is the international federation of professional footballers’ associations (Fédération Internationale des Associations de Footballeurs Professionnels).
It is the worldwide representative organisation for an estimated 65,000 professional footballers, with its global headquarters in Hoofddorp, Netherlands and has 67 national players’ associations.(NAN)
