The Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Priscilla Emehelu, has discharged one inmate and released 10 others on bail at the Nsukka Custodial Centre.
Emehelu, who was accompanied by other judges in the state to the centre reviewed over 60 cases in Nsukka as well as two cases from Oji River Custodial Centre.
Mr Monday Emeka, Public Relations Officer of Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Enugu State Command, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Enugu, added that the jail delivery took place on Sept. 1.
The chief judge said the exercise would be her last jail delivery as she would be bowing out of active on Sept. 7, when she would have clocked 65 years.
“The judiciary under my watch has worked assiduously to decongest the prisons in the state.
“I thank my brother judges and the officers and men of the NCoS, Enugu State Command for the robust coop0eration that made this feat achievable,” she said.
Earlier, Mr Godwin Onokohwomomo, the Controller of Corrections in NCoS, Enugu State Command, thanked the chief judge for a cordial working relationship with the command.
Onokohwomomo also wished the chief judge all the best during retirement from active service.
“Your term as the Chief Judge of Enugu State Judiciary is engraved in gold already,” he said.
The discharged inmate, Mr Boniface Onu, thanked the chief judge and the controller for making his discharge and acquittal possible.
“Today, the chief judge and the controller of corrections have made it possible for me to reunite with my family and I am promising to be of good behaviour and stay away from trouble,” Onu said. (NAN)
