The Association of Campus Broadcast Stations (ANCABS) has made a passionate appeal to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), to allow transmission to the satellite campuses with just one frequency instead of getting licenses for all satellites campuses.
Also, the association wants the broadcasting regulator to look into the consideration of giving the campus stations limited slot to take commercial within their locations to boost their operations.
Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye, President of ANCABS, made the appeal when he led members of the association on a courtesy call to the Acting Director General of NBC, Prof Amstrong Idachaban in Abuja.
He outlined the challenges the association is facing since its establishment, ranging from license renewal challenges to transmission problems of stations with multiple campuses where NBC has clamped down on stations transmitting beyond given frequency.
The Father of mass communication as he is fondly called, Prof. Akinfeleye also recalled that in most institutions outside Nigeria, citing Ghana as an example where students pay token alongside with their school fees to support the campus stations, noting that such cannot be introduced in Nigeria for fear of negative reaction from students.
The ANCABS President enjoined the NBC to allow transmission to the satellite campuses with just one frequency instead of getting licenses for all satellites campuses.
In his response, the NBC boss while welcoming the team stressed the need to fast track and create a strong bond between the commission and the association noting that since the institutions are where upcoming communicators are trained and formed, there is the need to form a strong synergy between the NBC and ANCABS.
He also noted that campus stations should be up and doing and stay within the purview of the licences given to them.
The NBC Acting DG noted that there is need to review the policy that establishes the campus stations in other to be able to do a proper review and align the campus stations to global status, assuring members of ANCABS of his support to call for a conference/summit where all issues pertaining to campus broadcast will be reviewed very soon.
He presented copies of the new edition of NBC code to the president of the association.
