The Police on Friday arraigned a 26-year-old Driver, Gabriel Benedict, in a Life Camp Magistrates ‘ Court for allegedly defrauding his employer of N114, 000.
The Police charged Gabriel of Dape Village, FCT Abuja, for criminal breach of trust, cheating and theft by servant.
The Police Prosecutor ASP Peter Ejike, FCT Command Abuja, told the court that Mrs Alice Adeyemo of Life Camp, Abuja reported the matter at the Life Camp Police station on Oct.11.
The Prosecutor alleged that sometimes in June, the defendant who was a driver at the complainant’s event company called Mabota Party Services intentionally diverted the company’s canopies and rented it out.
Ejike alleged that the defendant illegally rented the canopies to Living Spring Church in the month of June and the church as being paying the driver the sum of N4, 000 twice a week.
He said the defendant had received a sum total of N114, 000 from the church.
The Prosecutor told the court that on Oct.11, the illegal business of the defendant was exposed when the complainant received a call from the church to come and receive payment for the rented canopies.
Ejike said during Police investigation, the defendant was arrested and he confessed to the allegations, hence, all effort made by the Police to recover the money, proved abortive.
He said the offence contravenes the provisions of section 312, 312 and 289 of the Penal Code.
The defendant however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Chinyere Nwecheonwu however, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200, 000 and one surety in like sum.
Nwecheonwu ordered that the surety must be reliable and should live within the jurisdiction of the court.
She also ordered that the sureties deposit a recent passport photograph and a valid means of identification which must be verified by the court registrar.
The Magistrate however, adjourned the matter until Nov.30 for hearing.
