Nigeria forward Taiwo Awoniyi hopes to score on a regular basis for FSV Mainz as they continue their fight to escape relegation in the Bundesliga this season.
Awoniyi scored his first goal in the Bundesliga since arriving on loan from European champions Liverpool at the beginning of the season in Mainz 2-2 away draw at FC Cologne last Sunday.
It took the 22-year-old five minutes to find the back of the net after coming off the bench before Cameroon midfielder Pierre Kunde equalised for the visitors.
The young forward is now determined to ensure more will now follow to help steer Mainz away from the relegation zone. “I had a good feeling about the game because I’ve always been positive in my own game,” Awoniyi tells Liverpoolfc.com.
“Coming on from the bench, I know my team is in a difficult moment and for every player that was called upon, there is a lot of responsibility and you should come into the team to try to do the best and make the difference. That’s really what happened in the game.
“For me, I’ve always believed. I just have to fight and I just have to keep on going. Hopefully we can move ahead from there.”
Awoniyi will hope to impress again when Mainz host fourth-place RB Leipzig in their next league game on Sunday.
Achim Beierlorzer’s men occupy 15th position on the log with 27 points, from 26 games, four points above the relegation zone.
