More facts have emerged on the eligibility status of Nigeria’s John Mary Honi Uzuegbunam who has been invited to Cameroon Indomitable Lions camp ahead of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2021 qualifier matches scheduled for this month.
Prompt News contact in Cameroon has revealed that John Mary is more Cameroonian than Nigerian as he despite being born in Nigeria, has naturalized in Cameroon and has played for Cameroon U-20 national team in 2011, at the time he was playing with Union Douala in Cameroon.
It was also gathered that this is not the first time Cameroon has invited John Mary to Indomitable Lions as he has been twice an unused substitute when Cameroon played Cape Verde and Rwanda.
” Although he was not born in Cameroon, he has spent quite sometime here and he is quite popular in Cameroon than you can imagine.
“He met the five year criteria required by FIFA to switch nationality. He has the passion to play for the country”, revealed by our contact.
Born in Nnobi, Anambra State in Nigeria, he began his career with Cameroonian club AS Fortuna de Mfou Yaoundé. He left Yaoundé in 2009 and signed for Union Sportive de Douala.
On March 28, 2012, he was signed by Buriram United in what will be a beginning of three seasons spent in Thai football. From Buriram he moved to Bangkok Christian College in summer 2012, and next he played with Krabi in the 2013 Thai Division 1 League.
