As Nigeria joins the rest of the world on Sunday to celebrate and honour mothers worldwide, the First Lady, Patience Jonathan has described Nigeria women as “heroines” of the nation having contributed immensely to improving family values and cohesion.
She spoke at the special service to mark the Mothers’ day at the Aso Villa Chapel in Abuja.
She pays tribute to the strength and resourcefulness of the Nigerian women, while calling for the removal of impediments that have posed challenges to the progress and development of women and the girl-child.
The First Lady felicitates with women nationwide and praises great Nigerian women who have stood for the rebirth and transformation of a new Nigeria.
She further encourages Nigerian women to continue to use their positions as peace-makers and bridge-builders to work for peaceful co-existence in Nigeria.
“Women are home builders and peacemakers. A mother does not discriminate; she shares and she endures. A mother forgives, she loves naturally and unconditionally. Real mothers unite the nation and render selfless service to humanity”.
Mrs. Patience Jonathan takes advantage of the day to appeal to mothers’ use their enourmous influence in bringing up their children with the fear of the Lord. Quoting from the book of Proverbs Chapter 22 verse 6, the First Lady implores parents to take advantage of the formative years of their children to teach them the difference between right and wrong.
She reminds all of the sanctity of motherhood, one that deserves the highest regard in adoration and respect.
“As we celebrate our mothers today, I encourage all of us, to serve the best interest of Mothers everywhere. Honor her, respect her, show respect to her role and give her the value she deserves”.

Gifts were presented to the First Lady, mother of the President, mama Eunice Jonathan and other women by the church for their efforts towards reinstating the noble role of Motherhood in Nigeria.
