By Godwin Kingsley, Lafia Nasarawa State Attorney General, Innocent Lagi, has been locked behind bars for jumping into the State House of Assembly Complex.
The Attorney General it was learnt was on a mission to deliver a court injunction to restrain the House from quizzing officials of the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) over the just concluded March 22, Local Government Elections.
Prompt News Online reports that the Attorney General was denied entry to Assembly Complex with his leave green jeep with registration number EKY 459 CJ which prompted him to jump into the complex.
The House members who got the information immediately after the sitting rushed out to approach him which resulted to altercation between the AG and Majority Leader, Godiya Akwashiki.
The Majority Leader immediately requested that Mr. Lagi be arrested. The AG was promptly detained in the Assembly’s security post for about 30 minutes after which he was moved to the
Police headquarters in Lafia with an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC).
Speaking to newsmen shortly after the incident, Godiya Akwashiki, Majority Leader said the AG was arrested by the Police in order to determine the real motive behind his action.
He however, said the House would reconvene to chart the way forward on the issue.
Earlier, the State House of Assembly had received officials of NASIEC who were on ground to field questions from the lawmakers on the conduct of the LG polls.
Speaking in the committee of whole, members of the House alleged that there were irregularities in the conduct of the election.
The lawmakers took exception to Akwanga, Nasarawa and Obi where according to them, the Returning Officers of the Local Government declared the PDP as winners of the elections but was annulled by NASIEC, citing inconclusiveness as a reason.
The House maintained that the Local Government law passed by Assembly does not permit NASIEC to announce or annul result hence, requested that the commission should give reasons for annulling election in those LGAs.
Responding, Aliyu Modibbo Chairman NASIEC admitted that there were irregularities in the elections.
He also blamed politicians for manipulating elections in the said LGAs. “Politicians are all the same, whether PDP, APC or APGA they are the same. They are the ones making this issue to escalate to this point,” he said.
In reaction to the Chairman’s statement, the House reverted to plenary session and Francis Orugu, Member Representing Keana Constituency moved a motion that the commission should go and correct its anomalies before nightfall.
The motion which was seconded by Dogara Saka, Kokona West was adopted by the Assembly.
