Apparently embarrassed by the stampede that led to the death of over 16 job applicants during the recruitment exercise conducted by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) on Saturday, President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday summoned the Minister of Interior, Abba Moro and the Comptroller General of Immigration, David Parradang.
The duo on arrival at the State House first met with the Chief of Staff to the President, Jones Oladehinde Arogbofa before meeting with President Jonathan.
The recruitment exercise which held simultaneously nationwide was poorly conducted and has been widely criticised.
Consequently, many well meaning Nigerians, opposition party and civil societies’ organisations including the National Association Nigerian Students (NANS) have called on the President to sack the minister of interior, Abba Moro.
However, Moro said he would not quit so as not to be seen as running away from the problem created by the exercise saying he would carry on with the job and solve the problem.
The minister confirmed that over 526,000 applied to fill the 3,000 vacancies. Interestingly, each of the applicants paid N1,000 to write the aptitude test that has turned out to be a national tragedy.
