The Lagos State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it will deploy drones for surveillance of pipelines and other critical infrastructure to check vandalism.
Commandant of the corps in the state, Mr Tajudeen Balogun, disclosed this to newsmen on Wednesday in Alausa, Ikeja, while briefing them on some successes recorded by the command.
Balogun said that activities of vandals were becoming sophisticated, and therefore, needed a high-technology equipment like the drone to monitor some of their areas of operation, especially the creeks.
He said that apart from information from local communities, checking the vandals was becoming difficult as they improved on their crimes.
The commandant said that the command’s anti-vandalism unit attached to Atlas Cove recovered 506 jerry cans of 25 litres each on Monday, following information from the community.
He said that the command received an intelligence report on storage of products suspected to be Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise called petrol, at Ilashe.
“However, no suspect was apprehended but investigation is still ongoing to arrest the culprits. The suspects were planning to take the products through the waters to neighbouring country for sale.
“We appealed to communities that have pipelines through them to be vigilant on vandals’ activities as any fire outbreak from the pipe could cause great havoc to them,” he advised.
Balogun said that the confiscated products would be delivered to the appropriate authority for analysis and other actions.
