South Africa’s Banyana Banyana tasted the bitter pile of defeat in their last pre- World Cup international friendly match against reigning FIFA Women’s World Cup champions, United States of America (USA) after the African team was beaten 3-0 in the early hours of Monday at Levi Stadium, Santa Clara, California.
A brace from the enterprising midfielder, Samantha Mewis and another goal from super star, Carli Llyod ensured that the South Africans were defeated in their first ever match with the three-time FIFA Women’s World Cup winners.
Mewis struck first in the 37th minute and added her second in the 78th minute while Lloyd scored USA third goal in 90+2 minute of the entertaining match which was used by both countries to test their preparedness for the challenges in France this summer.
South Africa’s Head Coach Desiree Ellis and her team will head home immediately after the defeat to continue their preparations in order to make good impression in their debut participation in the FIFA Women’s World Cup final.
