The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has taken full responsibility for the postponement of the presidential and national assembly elections scheduled for Saturday, 16 February, by one week.
Addressing stakeholders in Abuja on Saturday, INEC chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, however, refused to formally apologise to Nigerians for the eleventh hour shift of the election.
The All Progressives Congress, APC, national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, in his intervention asked the INEC boss to apologise to Nigerians for waiting till 2.00am on election day to shift the polls.
But, Prof Yakubu, declined to tender the apology, rather saying “We regret what happened yesterday or early this morning.”
He attributed the postponement to bad weather, logistics and sabotage occasioned by burning of INEC offices in some states.
Prompt News Online recalls that the electoral umpire early Saturday morning (day of election) announced the postponement of presidential and national assembly elections to Saturday, 23 February while governorship and state assembly elections will hold on Saturday, 9 March, 2019.
“Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan and the determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections, the commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled is no longer feasible,” Prof Yakubu said.
