Former Governor of Imo State, Dr. Ikedi Ohakim has advocated for the return of the Imo Charter of Equity which allowed the three Senatorial Zones of the state to take turn to produce the Chief Executive of the state.
Ohakim who is seeking for the votes of the Imolites in the March 2 Gubernatorial Election under the platform of Accord Party to complete his second term which was truncated in 2011said that unless the Imo political elites decide to revisit the time- tested Imo Charter of Equity which Ndi Igbo is noted for, the citizens will continue to experience bad governance.
Speaking at a Town Hall parsley with Imo State Elders / Stakeholders & Leaders Forum in Owerri the state capital during the week, Ohakim tasked them to lend their voices to the Principle of Rotation of the Executive Power among the Three Senatorial Zones of Imo State.
The experienced technocrat argued that the disruption of the Imo Charter of Equity which saw Orlu Zone produce former Gov. Achike Udenwa who did eight years in office from 1999 to 2007 before handing over to him from Okigwe Zone but the zone was not allowed to complete its tenure in 2011 by forces who do not love Imo state.
Ohakim insisted that the Imo Charter of Equity ensured that power is transferred without much rancur even as he opined that the rotation of the plum job amongst the zones will encourage peaceful co-existence, good governance, development and productivity. He however told the forum that it will amount to a grave injustice if a candidated of Okigwe extraction is not allowed to complete the four remaining term, adding that he (Ohakim) should be supported yo complete his tenure in 2023 and handover to someone from Owerri Zone.
