The FCT Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) on Sunday described the late Olajide Fashikun as a veteran practitioner who was a friend of all.
Ikenna Okonkwo, the chapter’s Secretary, in a statement said the entire members of the chapter expressed deep grief on learning of their colleague’s death.
Ndubueze Chidoka, the chapter’s chairman, according to the statement, could barely speak immediately the shocking news was broken to him.
Chidoka had immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abuja where the late Fashikun had received treatment before dying and being deposited at the mortuary.
“I lack words to describe Fashikun who was committed to both his job and the service of his colleagues through SWAN. His legacies as long as journalism is concerned can’t be forgotten in a hurry.
“What more can I say, if not to pray God who knows and sees everything to give his family, sports writers, the entire media practitioners and the sporting world the fortitude to bear this loss?’’
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that news of Fashikun’s sudden death was received by the chapter’s leadership in the early hours of Sunday.
Popularly known as “Dudu Dara’’, Fashikun who died while receiving treatment at the FMC in Abuja Abuja was the publisher of a popular online medium, Gongnews.com
Samuel Fashikun, younger brother to Olajide Fashikun, had said the latter had suffered partial stroke before he was hurriedly taken to the hospital where he spent over one week.
He added that the family would soon meet to decide the burial plans.
