The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) says that he empowered more than 4,000 students during the eight-month strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
President of LAUTECH SUG, Anuoluwa Adeboye, made this known in a statement issued on Sunday in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the empowerment programme was tagged: “Beyond the Classroom: Students’ Participation in Entrepreneurship, Pathway to National Development.”
Adeboye said that the initiative was aimed at empowering the students with skills and resources outside the academics in order to enhance their financial strength during the ASUU strike.
“It was a skill acquisition and vocational training scheme meant to equip the students with all the skill and resources needed to earn them responsible living and legitimate income and financial independence.
”The online registration started on Feb. 24 and ended on Feb. 28, with more than 4,000 students registering.
“The programme kicked off with an orientation on March 7, while the training ran through the ASUU strike period.
“It was designed in a way that it enabled each session of the programme to hold three classes per week. It involved sessions of 20 skills – eight digital skills and 12 non-digital skills.
“The digital skills included: copywriting, data science, digital marketing, digital currency, frontend web development, graphic designing, python, UI/UX design, while the non-digital skills involved bag and bead making, barbing and catering, among others,” he said.
The institution’s acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mojeed Liasu, commended the students’ union government for making use of the limited resources to engage their colleagues in lifetime careers.
Liasu encouraged all the students who participated in the scheme to make the best use of the acquired skills. (NAN)
