Three salesmen on Monday appeared before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State over alleged
theft of their employer’s fabrics worth N5 million.
The accused — Ugwu Chidiebere, 31; Ekene Nwaiwu, 22; and Uchechukwu, 39 — are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and
stealing.
They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
According to the Prosecutor, ASP Roman Unuigbe, the accused committed the offences sometime in April at No. 10, Davis St.,
Balogun Market on Lagos Island.
He said the accused had been in the service of the complainant, Mrs Nneka Amaechi, for six months and she noticed that some
of her fabrics were missing.
Unuigbe said the accused were caught by the CCTV camera installed in the shop by the complainant.
“We have the footage that clearly shows the accused stealing the fabrics on different days.”
The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Section 287 (7) prescribes a seven-year jail term for clerks, servants stealing their
employer’s goods, while Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr P.A. Ojo, admitted the accused to a bail of N500,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
He said the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the case until June 27 for mention.
