By Godwin Okeh, ABAKALIKI The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 6, AIG Samuel Ogunyemi on Tuesday reiterated the readiness of the Force to prevent hijack of electoral materials in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.
Ogunyemi made this known while addressing policemen, political parties, aspirants, Hausa and Yoruba communities among other stakeholders in the state during his visit to the Ebonyi state police command headquarters, Abakaliki.
He said: “Our duty is to provide security and not to help politicians hijack electoral materials but where that happens, please report to the commissioner of police hence he has given out his phone numbers.
“You can do us good by reporting to the police and you can be sure that we will take appropriate action about it. I want to assure you that police under my watch in zone 6 will not be involved in the snatching of ballot boxes or to collaborate with politicians or anyone to rubbish the forthcoming 2019 electoral process.
“Ours is to provide security and to ensure that all voters are able to exercise their voting right in a good conducive atmosphere. That’s what we are promising the masses.
The AIG also warned politicians who are in the habit of driving vehicles without plate numbers or covering their plate numbers, especially in the forthcoming elections to desist and avowed the readiness of police to impound such vehicles.
“If you are driving a vehicle without plate number or covering it, we will impound your vehicle. If you have plate number and refused to put it, we will compel you to put the number” he stated.
Earlier in his remarks, the commissioner of police Ebonyi state command, Musa Kimo, expressed the readiness of the command to combat all crimes in the state, especially in the forthcoming elections.
Kimo assured that all political parties will be given equal chance and opportunity to operate, adding that the command will protect and provide security to the people of the state especially in 2019.
