By: Bolaji Oyegunle, London Ahead of 2015 presidential election, the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak on Monday launched the Goodluck Support Group (GSG) in London.
Speaking at the Cafe Royal Hotel, Piccadilly Circus, venue of the event, Gulak described the assumption of office of President Goodluck Jonathan as a “divine intervention” for Nigeria.
He noted that the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) cannot pull any surprise in the next poll as it remains marriage of strange bed fellows whose “romance will not last”.
The Presidential Adviser praised the President for tackling some of the country’s ills, such as the deep rooted illiteracy in Northern Nigeria, which, according to him accounts for 10.5 million children out of school with the establishment of the Almajiris school system.
Also, he cited the privatisation of the energy sector, which according to him; no Nigerian President had been able to do. While admitting that the road ahead is still far, Gulak however posited that “Nigeria has retraced its steps and following the right path.”
He told the audience, “He (Jonathan) has brought us to the mountain top and we have seen the Promised Land and this man will take us to the Promised Land.”
“President Goodluck Jonathan is not a sit tight President, he will never seek a third term.” And as if throwing the President’s hat into the empty ring, he said:” He is entitled to seek a second term.
“He has a constitutional right to seek a second term. Anyone saying he shouldn’t contest is turning the Constitution on its head and is not right,” adding “we are yet to have an alternative to President Jonathan in 2015.
“PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) is the only national party in Nigeria. It’s the only party with a manifesto,” and that next year’s elections will be a battle between PDP and “others.”
“From 1999, they’ve changed their names, from AD (Alliance for Democracy) to AC (Action Congress) to ACN (Action Congress of Nigeria) to CPC and now to APC,” but that “it’s only the PDP that has maintained its identity till date.”
