By Olusegun Lawrence The activities of the deadly Boko Haram insurgents have left about 195, 000 students displaced in the three frontline States of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.
Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, disclosed this on Monday.
Okonjo-Iweala, who chairs the Safe School Initiative, spoke at the opening ceremony of the interactive meetings organized by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Abuja.
Present at the meeting were the Principals and Guidance Counseling teachers of affected schools in the three states worst-hit by insurgency.
According to the Minister, Borno has the highest number of displaced students- 113.635, followed by Yobe- 73,894 and while 7,135 are from Adamawa.
The breakdown further shows that, 267 schools have been affected- 73 in Adamawa, 171 in Borno and 56 in Yobe states.
She said 115 schools were completely destroyed while 139 are partially destroyed by the insurgents.
On what the Safe School programme has been doing, Okonjo-Iweala, said the Technical Committee has identified 800 students from each of the states in high risk areas for transfer to 43 Federal Unity Colleges.
The minister said the parents of the students have agreed that their wards be transferred. She therefore, enjoined the school authorities to focus on the students.
Speaking, the Director General of NEMA, Muhammad Sani-Sidi, said the interactive meeting was to ensure smooth take-off of the relocation of the students to their new schools across the Federal Unity Colleges.
