At least 15 people have been confirmed dead following a tragic multiple-vehicle accident involving a trailer and a commercial vehicle on the Ilorin-Jebba Expressway in the Oko Olowo area of Kwara State.
Several others sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crash.
Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Wednesday when a trailer with registration number AYE 218 XC collided head-on with a commercial vehicle bearing registration number TTN 556 XA.
Both vehicles were reportedly traveling in opposite directions at the time of the collision.
Although the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is still investigating the exact cause of the accident, preliminary findings suggest reckless driving and speeding may have played a role.
The Kwara State FRSC Command has yet to release an official statement, though confirmation of the incident came via a senior officer in the command.
A video from the scene, shared by one of the rescuers, showed the overturned trailer and multiple bodies scattered along the road.
A voice in the video called on the government to implement stricter measures to curb the rising number of accidents on the Ilorin-Jebba Expressway, a route notorious for frequent fatalities.
Speaking on the incident, an FRSC official, who requested anonymity, disclosed that 15 people lost their lives, while three others sustained injuries.
FRSC Sector Commander Muftau Irekeola also confirmed the crash in a telephone interview on Thursday.
He stated: “It was a multiple-vehicle accident involving a trailer and a Canter truck. While the casualty figure of 15 may be accurate, I am still waiting for a detailed report from my officers at the Olooru unit.”
