The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi has attributed success of the commission to reduce Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) in 2015 by 12.99 per cent to Federal Government and World Bank’s robust support.
Mr Bisi Kazeem, Head, Media Relations and Strategy in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, stated that Oyeyemi said this at a conference on Global Road Safety Facility in Washington, U.S.A in a paper presented at the conference.
“Because of increased support in 2015, total fatality reduced to 5,044 from 5,991 in 2014 while Total RTC reduced to 9,031 compared to 10,380 in 2014, which amounts to 12.99 per cent RTC reduction, `it said.
It said that 5,044 lives were lost to road crashes in 2015 though which was 15.88 per cent reduction on the 5,996 lives lost in 2014.
The statement said human injuries as a result of road crashes reduced from 32,063 in 2014 to 27,782 in 2015 which amounts to 13.35 per cent reduction.
It said that there was a paradigm shift in FRSC service delivery.
The statement noted that Federal Government’s firm support towards the realisation of the commission’s mandate went a long way in the success recorded in 2015.
It said that the timely intervention of the World Bank, especially at six critical corridors in the country since 2013 had been of immense help to the commission.
The critical corridors where the World Bank’s intervention were deployed includes Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano corridor; Benin-Ifon-Akure-Ilesha corridor and; Mokwa-Bida-Lambata-Suleja Corridor.
Others are Jos-Bauchi-Gombe corridor,Enugu-Abakaliki- Ikom—Mfum Corridor and;Abuja metropolis.
“The World Bank supported operation of FRSC with seven units of 70-tonnes capacity heavy duty tow-trucks for removal of major road obstructions.
The statement said the commission would not be deterred with the enormity of its task of regulating movement of 12.76 million registered vehicles (motor vehicles and motorcycles) plying 204,000km road network.
