Nigerian author Ndifreke Ukpong recently shared his thoughts on the role of writing in addressing societal challenges, particularly during economic hardship.
Responding to questions about whether his novel ‘A Future in Chains’ could provide solutions to Nigeria’s economic struggles, Ukpong clarified that while writing cannot directly fix the economy, it has the power to inspire change and encourage creative thinking.
“Writing can’t fix the economy,” Ukpong stated, “but it can inspire solutions.” He explained that literature serves as a tool for raising awareness about important issues and sparking ideas that can lead to meaningful progress. For Ukpong, storytelling is not about offering immediate fixes but about helping people see their circumstances from new perspectives and motivating them to take action.
His novel, A Future in Chains, explores the struggles of individuals caught between oppressive traditions and the fight for a better future. While the book does not focus on economic issues, it highlights themes of resilience, education, and societal change—ideas that Ukpong believes are key to overcoming challenges, including economic hardship.
Ukpong emphasized that stories have the ability to shape minds and inspire people to think differently. He added, “Literature can teach us lessons, help us understand the world around us, and encourage us to solve problems creatively. It’s not a direct solution, but it can lead to one.”
The author also addressed the challenges faced by writers in Nigeria, particularly in the current economic climate. Many people, he noted, struggle to prioritize books when basic needs like food and shelter take precedence. This reality, he believes, has discouraged aspiring writers who see no financial reward in the profession.
Despite these challenges, Ukpong remains hopeful about the impact of writing. He believes that literature can play a significant role in education by encouraging critical thinking, teaching values, and fostering dialogue about societal issues. He pointed out that stories like A Future in Chains can inspire readers—especially young people—to pursue knowledge, question unfair systems, and work toward improving their communities.
To make his work more accessible, Ukpong revealed that he is working on a project to develop a mobile app that will allow readers to access his books offline for free. “People are struggling to afford books, and I want to make sure my stories reach as many readers as possible,” he explained.
While writing may not provide an immediate solution to economic hardship, Ukpong believes its role in shaping ideas, encouraging innovation, and motivating change cannot be ignored. He concluded by urging readers and writers to recognize the power of storytelling as a tool for progress and transformation.
“Stories are not just for entertainment,” he said. “They help us learn, understand, and imagine a better future. That is where solutions begin.”
