The Director-General, Universal Postal Union (UPU), Masahiko Metoki has urged stakeholders in the postal sector to take concrete steps to reduce climate change and other environmental challenges facing the world.
Mekoki stated this on Sunday via a statement made available to News Agency of Nigeria in commemoration of the 2022 World Postal Day celebrated annually on Oct. 9.
He urged the governments of UPU member countries to work with both public and private partners to secure climate investments for the postal sector.
Mekoki also called on postal formations to revive the spirit of innovation that helped them support their communities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
The D-G urged that postal outfits should leverage on past experiences to find innovative solutions that will reduce carbon footprints.
According to him, “ fighting climate change is no small task and let this year’s theme serve as a benchmark for finding appropriate and impactful responses to support communities.
“Real action requires real investments, but these investments will pay dividends towards our future.
“ We can no longer ignore the climate emergency.
“ Drastic changes in our environment are beginning to have dramatic impacts on our daily lives and livelihoods,” Mekoki said.
He also urged users of postal services to support the sector and work to build a better, as well as a brighter future.

To mark the day, NIPOST simultaneously organised a customers’ forum in postal offices across the country to appreciate its loyal customers for their consistent patronage over the years. (NAN)
